Accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine

Total Sleep Apnea Care is the sleep lab of Vishnu Patel, MD, FCCP, FASM, a board-certified sleep physician. Studies are performed here in Princeton and read by Dr. Patel himself, so the person who orders your test is the one who interprets it and explains what it means.

The lab has four private bedrooms, each sound-insulated and temperature-controlled, with a flat-screen TV and a private bathroom. A technologist is on site and monitoring throughout the night.

Who should be tested

Loud snoring, a partner who notices pauses in your breathing, waking unrefreshed, morning headaches, or fighting sleep during the day are all reasons to ask about a sleep study. Untreated sleep apnea raises the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and diabetes — and it is very treatable.

Sleep studies we perform

Diagnostic overnight study

Polysomnography — you sleep in a private room while sensors record brain waves, breathing, oxygen, heart rate and movement. The standard test for sleep apnea and other sleep disorders.

CPAP & BiPAP titration

An overnight study on the machine, adjusting the pressure through the night to find the setting that keeps your airway open comfortably.

Home sleep apnea test

A small device worn for one night in your own bed, for patients whose main question is sleep apnea. Our staff show you how to use it; Dr. Patel reads the result.

Overnight oxygen monitoring

Oximetry during sleep to check for low oxygen at night and to qualify patients for home oxygen.

Sleep disorders we evaluate and treat

  • Snoring
  • Obstructive sleep apnea and pauses in breathing during sleep
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness and unrefreshing sleep
  • Insomnia — trouble falling or staying asleep
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Narcolepsy

CPAP & mask support

  • Mask fitting and help choosing the right mask
  • Troubleshooting leaks, dryness, pressure and comfort problems
  • Reviewing your machine's data to see how treatment is working

Your night at the sleep center

Full preparation instructions are on the Your Visit page; here is the short version.

Before

  • No caffeine after lunch and no naps that day
  • Take your usual medicines unless told to hold one
  • Arrive with clean, dry hair — no oils, gels or sprays

Arriving

  • Come at the check-in time the office gave you
  • Park in the alley beside the building or the lot behind it — not the gravel lot
  • Use the dark door at the left end of the Total Sleep Apnea Care awning; if it's locked, knock

After

Sensors come off in the morning and you're free to go. Dr. Patel reads the study and the office calls you with results and next steps.
